Night Spiders

A horror book for under 10 years old

Chapter 1

Tim’s legs tickled as the ceiling fan threw air around the room. “You must be careful.” It was their first night out alone on a hunt.

Tim’s little brother’s feet kept slipping. “Why did we need to come this way?”

It was the route that thousands had taken before. Brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles. “because its the way. Stop fussing.”

The lights turned off every night at 7:33, and this route was necessary. Although it had proved safe for many generations, it was also one of the most inhospitable environments.

“Down, there! Let’s go down there.”

Tim turned. “No. There is no hunting down there.”

”Why?”

“Because it is far too unpredictable. We hunt based on predictable patterns, instincts, and strategies. There is no light down there. Most who go do not come back, and those that do, do not speak.”

”How do you know?”

”Because, a portion of our population disappears every week from this folly. I do not think that they are living their best life.”

”You are making that up.”

”I am not, it is true. Many of our own family disappeared last week. And what about the Webbs?”

Tim continued to maneuver around the slipperiest section as the moving air swirled. His parents had equipped him with an excellent eight-point grip maneuver, and his lead rope added even more stability. “How are you doing back there? Do you remember where you are supposed to place your feet?”

When Tim turned to check on his little brother, the light from the kitchen reflected off a thin strand. He traced the flicker to “down there.”

Chapter 2

”Hello?”

The echo of his words seemed to travel forever.
