It’s a Girl

A good friend of mine expressed his disappointment in the news received from the doctor. It’s a girl. Him and his son weeped in sadness for half of an hour. This response is understandable if you know the amount of built up hope and expectation.

This is a difficult one for me. Maybe because I have a son. But so does my friend. I have known those that only have girls. One of my best friends had four girls before they had a boy. There is joy in sons. However, there is arguable much more to learn, as a man, from daughters. They are not lessons by choice. If you can believe it, I am much gentler because of my daughter. A wife did not do that.

Some grief to be had but it is self inflicted. The grief is not universal and not justified.

To this, I would say, adopt a fatherless son. It checks all the boxes. The only box it doesn’t check is the illusion of your own input.
